What? The duck race?

Home » Archives for August 2018

August 31, 2018 by Kevin W

Are you going to be in Summit County this labor day weekend?  Welp, if so then here is the perfect way to spend your first afternoon in September.  Dig through your pockets and see if you can find some loose 1 dollar bills.  5 of em’ gets you your own special ducky friend who has the ability to race down the Blue River and win you 1500 dollars cash!  What? The duck race?  Yes!! A full blown rubber duck race…with lots of cash up for grabs.  The races start at 1 pm, beginning with the children’s duck race, the business races at 2 pm, and then the great rubber duck race at 3 pm.

The race will begin at the blue river plaza right on Main Street.  In the plaza will be a kids zone, some live art, and some fresh BBQ out on the lawn!  Have some fun and fill your stomach before the blue river turns yellow, filled with rubber ducks. No matter what age you are a river filled with toy ducks It truly is a sight to see.  Come out and be a kid for the day!  With a chance at $1500 why wouldn’t you?!  Be sure to check out Breckenridge Grand Vacations for all your rooming needs . . after all they are the ones who are helping to put on this wonderful event.

If you’d like to enter the race go follow the link and adopt your ducky today!   Bert and Ernie look they are prepped and ready for this Saturday’s race too.  Competition seems to be heating up this year.

Bert & Ernie-Rubber Duck Racing Connoisseurs

Good luck out there and happy September to you all.  The leaves are already changing so don’t forget to get outside and enjoy the beautiful, yet brief, fall season!!

Copper Country at Copper Mountain

-Labor Day Weekend-

SEPT 1-2, 2018

There’s a sweet line up for this family friendly festival (illiteration not intended).  Nashville’s The Long Players (photo above) cover classic rock albums in their entirety; caring for the details and nuance of the album.  Each guest vocalist adds his own flavor.  Intriguing; I’m guessing their original material (however little played) is solid.  Ricky Skaggs (seen below) will have bluegrass fans happy to be together again! Here’s the line up from coppercountryfest.com.  By the way, it’s a FREE show!

Stroll through the art exhibits and pick up an original piece; something for the garden, a metal house number, or some out of the ordinary wall decor.  I’m always in search of the perfect set of earrings.  There will be plenty of food and drink too so bring your appetite.  Hope to see you there!

A week in Colorado

Home » Archives for August 2018

August 24, 2018 by Kevin W

Ever wonder what life is like for the people on the other side of the phones here at Summit Express?  If you didn’t that’s fine . . but I’m going to tell you anyway 🙂  Here’s a few things that I was able to do in just a week in Colorado(mostly before coming into work at 2).  Feel free to see some of the same places when you come out to visit!  They are certainly worth a little exploration.

Monday: The snow has been gone for too long so I went up for a morning hike to Saint Mary’s Glacier.  Only 30-40 minutes outside of Summit, this is one of the true “somewhat still hidden gems” of Colorado.  Get there early to beat the crowds BUT more importantly to catch the sun rising!  If you don’t mind almost freezing water there is a pretty cool cliff jumping area down by the lake.  The hike up is fairly easy so bring the whole family for some glacier fun.

NOTE: Bring warm clothes for the hike back down after swimming!

The glacier in all its beauty

Wednesday:  Mountain biking through the old mines in Breckenridge.  These trails are for hiking and biking, allowing anyone to come enjoy these views.  There is a lot of rich history so make sure to stop and read the plaques and signs!  The best access is from French Gulch, which has plenty of pull offs and multiple trail heads to hike from.  These trails are only ten minutes from the main drag so this is an excellent place to schedule in to an already busy day!  Check out the Country Boy mine and take the tour if you have some extra time.

Looking over French Gulch

Thursday: Rock Climbing and cliff Jumping at Paradise Cove.  This spot is a really beautiful place to spend the day or even just to take a quick dip.  Paradise cove offers great views as well as the perfect little swimming hole.  It’s about a 2 hour drive from Summit but well worth the drive.  It certainly gets you away from the crowds of Summit County and Denver.   If you are looking for a cheap thrill just hike a little ways up and take the plunge!  Just make sure to be safe and check the water levels 🙂

A Leap of Faith.

All in a weeks work!!  I love my job here at Summit Express because we get to help guests get up to mountains, giving them the ability to enjoy this place just the way we do!  Its a special feeling to see just how much joy these mountains truly bring people.   Its an added bonus that we also get to enjoy it 😉 Have fun out there and be safe!

Babies, toddlers and kids- OH MY!

Yep, I’m totally unqualified to give you advice about kids, #notamamma;).  But as requested, I can give you some great resources for travelling with kids- parent approved!

Take it from a dad in the know.  The writer of Dadsolo.com has a helpful article for family travel.  Read the article below.

Turn Traveling with Children into Dream Vacations (Instead of Nightmares!)

Also, I think you’ll like BabyQuip, a one stop online shop for equipment rentals for your littles.  You may book online yourself, or if you have a complex itinerary you may send them your itinerary along with the ages of your kids and the equipment you’ll need.  They’ll take care of the rest, including delivery, set up, and pick up!

Summit express offers free child seats and booster seats.  If you have kiddos 8 years old or younger please let us know so we can provide the appropriate seat.  Safe and happy travels!

sTrolling around Breck

Home » Archives for August 2018

August 17, 2018 by Kevin W

Looking for a quick hike with some beautiful Mountain View’s and maybe even . . . a life size troll?  Well then, we have just the hike for you.   Get your family and friends together and go sTrolling around Breckenridge and head towards the Wellington Trail.  With a little luck you just might find Isak Heartstone, the friendly neighborhood troll.

Attention: Isak has been moved to the trails surrounding the Ice Arena, find Isak in his new home there! Get directions from gobreck.com.

troll-new-home

Isak Heartstone was built for the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts, which lasts for 9 days in locations all over Breck.  There is still two days left for the actual festival but Isak Heartstone is here to stay. . . at least for a few years.  Check out the link above for more information about the artist and his inspiration for creating Isak.

The troll has been a popular destination during the middle of the day so pick a good time to explore .  If you wanted to get some photos while no one is around try going early in the morning or just before sunset for the most personable experience.

For easy access park at the Wellington Bike Park lot. From there the trail is just a few hundred feet from the parking lot. Start going up the dirt road and it is your first little trail on the left.  From here it’s just a 10 minute walk up to where the troll hides.  If the troll wasn’t enough be sure to keep hiking up the trail.  These same trails will lead you to some old mines and much more.

Attention: Isak has been moved to the trails surrounding the Ice Arena, find Isak in his new home there! Get directions from gobreck.com.

Have fun out there and be sure to check out all the other amazing art installations built for the festival!  If you need a ride to or from the Summit County make sure to give us a call at 970-668-6000

Kick Push: A Roll in Movie Night

Catch the outdoor feature at the Riverwalk Center lawn in Breckenridge today 8/14 at 8:30 PM.   Kick Push: A Roll in Movie Night is aptly named for at least 2 reasons; first, it’s a film about wheels and the inspiring people who push their limits.  Second, the movie is showing in the park and the best way to get there is ON WHEELZ 😉 .   BreckFilmFest is teaming up with Breckenridge International Festival of Arts /BIFA to get this show to you FREE of charge!  You can thank them by visiting their websites and seeing what else they have going on and how you may contribute.

See the source image

If you’re not already hooked up with manual transportation get over to Alpine Sports and rent some.  There are great summer rental discounts so no need to buy new.  But, if buying new makes better sense for you hit up Sun & Ski in Dillon.  Summit county is an ideal place for a bike or skateboard; these small mountain towns are close to each other and the trails that wind throughout are amazing!  Most of our main roads have a bike lane reserved for you.  I could go on and on about the bike trails but it’ll be better for you to just get on ’em.  Click here for lots of trail maps and other helpful info.

Silverthorne’s Rainbow Park has a great skate park, so does Frisco.  Copper Mountain boasts the only indoor skate park.  Breckenridge has the first one laid down in Summit.

Well, layer up ladies and gents cuz it’s chilly after the sun sets.  Cozy up with friends, family and perfect strangers for an exciting look into the world of wheels (sans motor).

Our flight arrived a little early. A quick phone call Summit Express was able to change our reservation to put us on the next pickup, instead of waiting another two hours in the airport. We were on our way to our final destination in minutes!

From now on, these guys are my new shuttle service when travel around Colorado. We had a mishap with our luggage while on our way to Breckenridge.  When we realized it, United Airlines called me and explained to me that I had to go back to the airport. Scott, from Summit immediately asked me if he could speak to the rep.

Long story short, Scott tried to explain to the rep that they can go back to the airport and pick up our luggage…they’ve done it before for customers in the past.  Unfortunately, United couldn’t give us a straight answer, so my friend and I had to make the 2 hour drive back to Denver.

Either way, Summit and Scott were amazing. They gave us a great rate to go back to the airport and back to Breckenridge.

Go with Summit if you plan to make trips around Colorado. I highly recommend them.
