Colorado ski trip altitude sickness prevention tips

Home » Local Colorado News » Colorado ski trip altitude sickness prevention tips

March 15, 2024 by Alex McGregor

Breckenridge Transfer StationSo you’re gearing up for an epic ski adventure in beautiful Colorado? That’s awesome! But before you hit the slopes, let’s chat about something important: altitude sickness. 🏔️

Now, I know altitude sickness sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but trust me, it’s all too real. And we want to make sure you have the absolute best time on your ski vacation without any sickness ruining the fun. So here are five tips to help you prevent altitude sickness and keep you on the slopes

  1. Hydrate! 💦
Altitude can mess with your body’s hydration game. So, to combat its affects, make sure you’re drinking water like it’s your job. And don’t just stop at H2O – grab some electrolyte-filled drinks too, like Gatorade or coconut water, to replenish those essential minerals. Stay hydrated and show altitude who’s boss!
  2. Take it slow and steady 🐢
We get it, you’re excited to get right out on the mountain. But remember, the higher you go, the harder your body has to work. So don’t push yourself too hard too fast! Take breaks, catch your breath, and give your body time to adjust to the altitude. It can take a few days to adjust, but we promise, you’ll be happy you had a slower start to your vacation.
  3. Fuel up, my friend! 🍎🍔
Altitude can actually affect your appetite. Make sure you’re eating well and fueling your body with nutritious foods.  It’s best to eat smaller meals throughout the day so you don’t have your digestion system working too hard all at once. Bonus tip – small meals will help you avoid the “after lunch cold” that can be brutal on chilly days.
  4. Limit the booze! 🍻
I know, I know, après-ski and a cold one go together like peanut butter and jelly. But here’s the thing: alcohol can dehydrate you, and when combined with high altitude, that’s a recipe for disaster. So, enjoy that well-deserved drink, but remember to keep it in moderation. That way, you can still have a great time without sacrificing your well-being.
  5. Get some zzz’s! 😴
Sleep is the ultimate secret weapon to conquer altitude sickness. Your body needs time to adjust and recover from all the ski adventures you’ll be having. So do yourself a favor and make sure you’re getting enough shuteye.

What if you need some extra help?

If you’ve got a headache that won’t go away or any other lingering altitude symptoms, it may be time to get some extra oxygen flowing.  There’s a few business that can help –  24hr oxygen and High country oxygen delivery services!

These services are absolute lifesavers when it comes to helping you feel your best at high altitude. Think of it like having your own personal oxygen supply delivered right to your doorstep! No more feeling like a fish out of water, struggling to catch your breath. These services are super convenient and easy to use. Just give them a call, and they’ll handle the rest. Whether you’re at your hotel, condo, or rental property, they’ll bring the oxygen straight to you.

If you know you have altitude problems before your vacation even stars, you can schedule your delivery ahead of time so your lung saving oxygen will be waiting for you.

See, altitude sickness doesn’t stand a chance against these  tips! With a little bit of smart planning and self-care, you’ll be zooming down those slopes with the wind in your face, a smile on your lips, and nothing to hold you back.

Now go out there and have the ski trip of a lifetime! 🎿😄

We booked a trip to Colorado, and being Florida natives and not used to driving in the snow, we wanted to shuttle from Denver Airport to Copper Mountain Resort. A friend recommended Summit Express. The driver (Christopher) picked us up at the scheduled time, was extremely friendly and helpful. He talked with me the entire 2 hour ride to Copper Mountain and gave me lots of local information and tips that were very helpful during our stay.

The return trip was just as accommodating. I didn’t get our drivers name, but he was friendly and helpful with our baggage and airport transfer. Overall, we couldn’t have been more satisfied with the service. I strongly recommend using this express if you’re not familiar with the area and terrain.

The exceptional personal service provided by everyone in your company from the online chat, phone calls with customer service agent, drivers and representative at the airport, arriving for pick up at the EXACT time, sending text message reminders… Your company excels at everything a customer wants and needs. The bottom line is that you provide a personal experience, in the future we will only use your company.
