I-70E – Chain Law Code 18
Between Exit 176: Vail (Vail) and Exit 190: Vail Pass Summit (1 mile west of Copper Mountain) from Mile Point 178 to Mile Point 190. Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV) must have chains or approved alternative traction devices. Slower speeds are advised.
I-70E – Traction Law Code 15
Between Exit 176: Vail (Vail) and Exit 190: Vail Pass Summit (1 mile west of Copper Mountain) from Mile Point 178 to Mile Point 190. Passenger vehicles that are all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) must have winter (Mountain Snowflake icon) or mud and snow (M+S or M/S) or manufacturer rated all-weather tires with adequate tread depth of at least 3/16 of an inch. Two-wheel drive (2WD) vehicles are required to have chains or an approved traction device.

Between Exit 203: CO 9; East Frisco (Silverthorne) and Exit 232: US 40; Empire Junction (Georgetown) from Mile Point 205 to Mile Point 228. Passenger vehicles that are all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) must have winter (Mountain Snowflake icon) or mud and snow (M+S or M/S) or manufacturer rated all-weather tires with adequate tread depth of at least 3/16 of an inch. Two-wheel drive (2WD) vehicles are required to have chains or an approved traction device.
